Sustainable Warm Homes
Decent & Safe Homes (DASH) was commissioned by the East Midlands Regional Assembly (EMRA) to organise a series of events to take place throughout the East Midlands region. Specialist speakers were on hand to provide information and insights into the provision of the choice, installation the retrofitting of efficient and affordable heating systems.
Tom Toumazou started the days proceedings with a presentation entitled Excess Cold - The Killer Hazard [1.99mb]. This looked at the health implications of excess cold and how this is examined within the Housing Health & Safely Rating System (HHSRS).
Newark & Sherwood District Council has been recognised as real innovators in energy efficiency activities. An energy performance database has been adopted to measure, monitor and establish which households may be in fuel poverty and how many dwellings cannot deliver affordable energy. David Pickles, the Sustainable Energy Manager from Newark and Sherwood District Council, outlined the data involved in Fuel Poverty Proofing our Social Housing Stock and how to make use of the information and analysis provided by energy databases of their local housing stocks. He concluded by suggesting an affordable sustainable energy action plan which considers the impact of:
- Education, advice and guidance
- Energy efficiency in the form of insulation, heating and controlled ventilation
- Energy Efficiency in the form of lighting, appliances and entertainment
- The maximisation of grants, discounts and soft loans
- Income maximisation via first contact
- Social Tariffs
- Lower Co2 fuels and renewable fuels
If you are looking to install a renewable energy technology, for domestic or commercial use, it is a good idea to find out as much as possible about the technology first. Phil Angus and Jerome Baddely from the Nottingham Energy Partnership asked the question Renewable Energy ~ Which solution for which circumstance? [4.46mb] Their detailed presentation guided the audience through the strengths and weaknesses of:
- Solar Water Heating
- Photovoltaics
- Wind Power
- Heat Pumps
- Biomass
Andrea Griffiths-James from Nottingham Community Housing Association (NCHA) discussed the practical considerations of installing renewable energy solutions. Her presentation Energy and Environmental Services [1.84mb], gave delegates the practical help and advice needed to help deliver sustainable energy in domestic housing and outlined several examples of projects delivered by NCHA.
Representatives from housing services, managers and operational staff attended the event, with over 140 delegates attending the training sessions. The feedback DASH received from each of these events proved they were extremely well received by both RSL's and local authorities from across the region.
Local Lettings Agency
Decent And Safe Homes (DASH) and Derventio would like to invite you to attend the Launch Event of the Local Lettings Agency on Monday 11th October 2010 at the YMCA.
-------------------------------------------------About the Agency
The Local Letting Agency (LLA) will offer both a tenant matching service and full property management for landlords in Derbyshire. The main differences from traditional agencies are that the tenants are those in receipt of local housing allowance and any profits derived from the agency are recycled back into service delivery.
-------------------------------------------------
Who should attend?
This is a must for everyone working in housing provision and the community: Councilors, chief officers, directors, managers and operational service staff. You will gain an insight into some of the key issues faced by the service and have the opportunity to network with colleagues from other areas. Key staff from Derventio and DASH will be on hand to answer your questions.

YMCA Derbyshire 770 London Road Derby DE24 8UT
